Jiangsu Academy of Building Sciences Low Carbon Technology Office Building is adjacent to Hongshan Zoo, with a total land area of about 6,783 square meters. As a pilot project of provincial and municipal urban renewal, the project adheres to the concept of whole-life, systematic low-carbon design, applies a variety of green and low-carbon special technologies, and has obtained a number of certified labels, such as three-star green building, gold-level healthy building, and near-zero-carbon building.It is expected that the total carbon emissions of the whole life cycle of the building will be reduced by one-third compared with that of a conventional building, and the carbon intensity of the building's operation phase will be reduced by about 681 TP3T.

Stepping into the Academy of Sciences, the first thing that caught our eyes was the highly technological facade - photovoltaic panels intertwined with green grooves, constituting a picture of symbiosis between modern architecture and nature.This unique design, known as an "eco-skin", saves electricity and generates carbon sinks.

Low Carbon Renewal Recycling of Existing Components

The project takes the atrium with the collective memory of the old factory building as the spatial core, and integrates the three building types of demolition and utilization, renovation and new construction in the renewal.Avoiding the "big demolition and big construction" mode, maximizing the revitalization of space and enhancing the value of land.

The roof frame of the former experimental workshop, after protective demolition and reinforcement, was reborn on top of the new lecture hall; the counterforce wall, which represents the corporate culture, was cut and placed at the main entrance, becoming the brand-new Logo Wall. The scissor braces of the old factory building were transformed into railings, the removed red bricks were built into non-load-bearing walls, and the old railroad tracks were cut off and turned into nurseries and seats in the garden. ......According to the estimation, the carbon reduction of reusing existing components in the demolition phase of old buildings reaches more than 40%.

The roof and south elevation of the building are equipped with solar photovoltaic panels with a total installed capacity of 238 kW, consisting of 406 monocrystalline silicon blocks.The roof part of the photovoltaic panels also innovatively uses an automatic daylight tracking system, which allows the panels to always face the sun at the optimal angle, so that they can "absorb" the sunlight with the highest efficiency.
"We applied cadmium telluride photovoltaic power generation glass on the top skylight of the building, which can both light and generate electricity." The project leader said."With this photovoltaic building integration technology, the building is able to generate about 200,000 kWh of power on its own per year, which accounts for one-third of the electricity consumption of the entire building, and the proportion of renewable energy application exceeds 30%."
Intelligent Operation and Maintenance "Breathing" office space

Carbon reduction smarts don't just stop at the construction stage.The project is equipped with the self-developed "intelligent brain" - building intelligent operation and maintenance system.It allows buildings to "sense" their own energy consumption and environmental data, and "intelligently" optimize their operating strategies on their own.The system realizes accurate control of air conditioning, lighting and other equipment through AI algorithms.For example, it automatically adjusts the fresh air in the area and shuts down unmanned equipment, thus further reducing the operating energy consumption by 5%~10% and keeping the green efficiency online.
Using the Gold Standard for Healthy Buildings as a guideline, the construction unit has adopted technologies such as adjustable external shading, high-efficiency HVAC equipment, and indoor environmental quality monitoring.Realization of indoor temperature fluctuation of ≤1°C and CO2 concentration of less than 800 parts per million.The atrium patio introduces natural light, with green walls and silent fresh air system, creating a "breathing" office space.

From the "ecological skin" of energy saving and carbon reduction, to the recycling of old components, to the precise control of intelligent operation and maintenance, the renewal of Jiangsu Academy of Construction Science low-carbon technology office building is not only a transformation of a building, but also a deep fusion of urban renewal and the goal of "double carbon".
